Goa Casinos Hike Entry Fees After 40% GST on Gaming; Operators Fear Tourism Impact
Following the implementation of a 40 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) from September 22, most off-shore casinos operating on the River Mandovi have increased their entry fees. Across categories — ordinary, classic, premium, and lux ury — the hike is generally Rs 500, while one opera tor has raised the fee by Rs 1,000 in a specific catego ry. Live entertainment and drinks remain unaffected. “We have increased rates in all categories as per 40 per cent GST. Peo ple have accepted it. It is not something unique for us, and it is for the entire country. People have ac cepted it and there is no problem,” said an official of a casino operator.
Another operator noted that while their 40 per cent GST on gaming has been imposed, the entry fee is yet to be revised. “We have started imposing a 40 per cent GST on gaming and are awaiting for a decision from our associa tion on revising entry fee,” he said. Asked about the impact on patronage, he added, “Current ly Navratris are going on and we expect more visitors soon.” However, casino operators have expressed apprehen sions that the new GST could affect revenue and the broad er tourism economy in Goa, which relies heavily on gaming as a major attraction. “The 40 per cent GST on casinos and online gaming may impact earnings, and it remains to be seen how the sector adapts,” an industry source said. All casinos will remain closed on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, as a mark of respect to the “Father of the Nation,” Mahatma Gandhi. Six off-shore casinos operate on the Mandovi and are a key draw for tourists visiting the State. As the GST comes fully into force, the impact on Goa’s gaming economy and tourism sec tor is expected to become more visible in the coming weeks
